How do I make sure that my financial affairs are taken care of should something happen to me?
- There are 2 different life events that you need to think about, passing away and becoming mentally incapacitated. To make sure your estate is properly taken care of and your wishes are carried out, you need to have a will. To make sure you are taken care of if you suffer from a mental illness, you need to make sure you have a power of attorney in place.
- We recommend that both of these documents should be prepared by an attorney who works in the area of estate planning. When preparing your will ask your attorney about a codicil to document any specifics that you may not have included in your will. Contact us if you need help finding a local attorney.
